UQ SOUND SHELL

The University of Queensland recently undertook a renovation of its lake and amphitheatre zone. This zone includes a wetland rich with natural flora and fauna species, providing a natural environment for students and the community to relax, disengage with the world’s pressures and re-engage with each other.

Part of the renovation was the construction of a covered stage area – the Sound Shell – which sits between the lakes and the Dr Mary Mahoney AO Amphitheatre. Construction was completed late in 2024. The Sound Shell is designed to accommodate up to 35 performers, and to help project their voices to the amphitheatre, which seats up to 400.

Materials used in construction include engineered timber for the framework, copper shingle on the exterior of the curved roof, with brass panelling on the interior.
